An anecdote behind the creation of Apple’s iconic logo.

Many of us are loyal customers of Apple, and of we all are well acquainted with the logo of this notable brand- “An apple with a single bite”. But is that all? There is a story hidden behind the making of this design? Want to know? Continue reading.

Apple products have become a part of our everyday life, but just like its name, its logo is also strange. Do you know every design tells a story? Apple’s iconic logo is not an exception to this fact.

In 1976, when the company was established by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne, they envied to make computers available everywhere- from people’s home to workplaces. The first logo that was designed by Ronal Wayne featured an Image of Isaac Newton sitting under the tree and an apple falling, thereby, representing the law of gravity. It also encompassed a quote on the logo frame, written by William Wordsworth,” Newton… a mind forever voyaging through strange seas of thought”.

But why the name Apple?

Since one can easily relate Apple with Sir Isaac Newton, the name was picked. But somewhere in his mind Steve Jobs believed the logo of their brand was quite frumpy. And he needed a design that will sync perfectly to the Apple products of the modern era. He coveted a small yet impressive logo, with the same brand name “Apple”.

And soon he hired Rob Janoff, to create the logo of this famous brand. And it was he who created the most stunning design of “Apple with a single bite”.

According to John Keats, the logo of Apple is a tribute to Allan Turing, for his remarkable contribution to modern computing and artificial intelligence. After his death, a half-eaten apple was discovered from his apartment and that incident was unveiled through this iconic logo.

But the real story is somewhat different.

Steve Jobs, during this early days, worked in Apple orchards, he glued himself with Apple and its favourite brand McIntosh, and couldn’t find a better name than this. And, according to Rob Janoff, the design was created with rainbow coloured trips to make the brand accessible to others and emphasize the introduction of the coloured screen. Also, the bite of the Apple was crafted to ensure people don’t confuse it with a cherry, and it is something that most of us have experienced.

Eventually, after 22 years of glittery success, the rainbow colours were deterred from the design by Steve Jobs and was replaced with a Monochrome design, making the overall shape unaltered, which is equally famous.

Today, the popularity of this iconic design has outgrown the popularity of the brand name. Now the brand doesn’t even need to include its name on the various products that are retailed. Only a logo is enough to take their customers into confidence. Probably that’s why Steve Jobs wants everybody to “Think Different”.
